Our Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Merzouga is designed for travelers who want to see the Sahara without making Merzouga simply a place to sleep. From Fes, we’ll cross the Middle Atlas, stop in Ifrane and the cedar forests, pass through the beautiful Ziz Valley, and reach the desert in time for a sunset camel trek and a special night in a luxury Sahara camp.
What makes this Fes to Merzouga desert tour different is the full day we keep for the desert itself. By 4×4, we’ll explore the landscapes around Merzouga, spend time with a nomad family, experience the music of Khamlia and have the chance to taste local food. Optional experiences such as a cooking class or quad biking can also be added for travelers who want something more active.

Itinerary: Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Merzouga
Day 1: Fes -Ifrane - Cedar Forest - Midelt - Ziz Valley - Merzouga Desert
Our Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Merzouga begins around 8:00 AM, when our driver-guide meets you at your riad or hotel in Fes. As we leave the city behind, the landscape quickly becomes greener as we climb into the Middle Atlas. Our first stop is Ifrane, a clean and peaceful mountain town often called the Switzerland of Morocco because of its Alpine-style houses and cooler climate. We’ll take a little time here to stretch our legs, enjoy a coffee if you wish, and settle into the rhythm of the journey.
From Ifrane, we’ll continue through the cedar forests around Michlifen and Azrou, where we may spot the wild Barbary macaques that live in this part of the Middle Atlas. The road then leads us towards Midelt, known locally for its apple-growing region, where we’ll stop for an optional lunch. After Midelt, you’ll begin to notice one of our favorite changes on this route: the green mountain scenery slowly gives way to the warmer colors and open landscapes of southeast Morocco. We’ll stop above the beautiful Ziz Valley, where thousands of date palms follow the river between dry mountains and old villages a first real feeling that the Sahara is getting closer.
We plan to reach Merzouga around two hours before sunset, giving you time to relax before your camel trek into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes. We’ll leave the main luggage to be transferred separately by 4×4 while you ride into the dunes with only the personal things you need. If camel riding isn’t for you, we’ll happily take you directly to the camp by 4×4 instead. After sunset, you’ll settle into your private luxury desert tent, enjoy a Moroccan dinner, and later join us around the campfire for Amazigh music and a relaxed desert evening. Before going to sleep, take a moment to look up at the clear Sahara sky can be one of the most memorable parts of the night. If you don’t mind waking early, we also recommend stepping outside before sunrise to watch the first light appear over Erg Chebbi.

Day 2: Merzouga 4x4 Sahara Tour - Nomads - Khamlia - Desert Hotel
After breakfast at the camp, there is no long road waiting for us today. Instead, we’ll spend the day discovering Merzouga and the Sahara by 4×4, one of our favorite ways to explore beyond the places reached by the main road. Our route takes us across changing desert landscapes, from sandy tracks to the darker open plains around the dunes. Along the way, we’ll visit a nomad family, where we can share tea and learn a little about a way of life that has been part of this region for generations. We prefer to keep this visit natural and respectful, with time to talk, ask questions and understand how families adapt to life in the Sahara.
We’ll continue our 4×4 Merzouga sahara tours towards Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa musical traditions. Here we’ll stop for a live music experience before taking time for lunch. If you’re curious about local food, we recommend trying Medfouna, often called Berber pizza a stuffed bread traditionally prepared in this part of southeast Morocco. For travelers who enjoy getting more involved, we can also arrange a local cooking experience on request, giving you the chance to learn how one of the region’s dishes is prepared rather than simply ordering it from a menu.
Later, we’ll return to our comfortable hotel beside the dunes, where the afternoon is yours to slow down. You can relax by the pool, enjoy the desert views or simply have some quiet time after our 4×4 exploration. Towards sunset, you can walk directly towards the dunes from the hotel, or, if you’d like something more adventurous, we can arrange an optional quad biking tour in Merzouga. Riding across the desert as the afternoon light begins to soften is one of the most popular things to do in Merzouga and a great way to finish a day that shows you a very different side of the Sahara.

Day 3: Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Midelt -Cedar Forest - Ifrane - Fes
After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll say goodbye to Merzouga and begin our journey north towards Fes. Although this is our final day, there is still plenty to see along the road. Leaving the Sahara behind, we’ll travel through the southeast towards the Ziz Valley, stopping at a panoramic viewpoint where the palm oasis stretches between the mountains. It is one of our favorite places to pause on the Merzouga to Fes route, especially because you can clearly see where the green valley meets the dry landscape around it.
From the Ziz region, the road begins climbing again through mountain scenery towards Midelt, where we’ll have time for an optional lunch and a comfortable break. We’ll then continue into the Middle Atlas, passing cedar forests and small mountain communities. If the Barbary macaques are around, we can make a short stop to see them before continuing through Ifrane. We keep the return journey flexible, so there is always time for coffee, a restroom break or a photograph when needed.
By late afternoon or early evening, we’ll arrive back in Fes, where our driver will take you directly to your riad, hotel or another agreed meeting point. This is where our Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Merzouga comes to an end. In only three days, the journey has taken us from the Middle Atlas to the Sahara, through local desert communities and back to Fes not simply with a night in the desert, but with time to experience Merzouga beyond the dunes.

FAQs: Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour
Is 3 days enough for a desert tour from Fes to Merzouga?
Yes. Three days works well when you want to experience the Sahara without adding a long tour to your Morocco itinerary. Our route includes the journey from Fes to Merzouga, a luxury desert camp and, importantly, a full day around Merzouga, so the desert is more than simply an overnight stop.
What makes this Fes to Merzouga tour a luxury desert experience?
For us, luxury is not only about the tent. We combine private transport, carefully selected accommodation, a comfortable pace and a private luxury camp in the Sahara. We also leave time to enjoy Merzouga rather than arriving late and leaving again early the following morning.
Why do you include a full day in Merzouga?
Because there is much more to Merzouga than camel riding. Our second day is dedicated to a 4×4 Sahara tour, allowing us to explore desert tracks, visit a nomad family, experience the music of Khamlia and discover parts of the region that travelers staying only one night often miss.
Should I start my Morocco desert tour from Fes or Marrakech?
It depends on your Morocco itinerary. Fes Desert Tours cross the Middle Atlas, cedar forests and Ziz Valley on the way to Merzouga, while Marrakech Desert Tours usually travel through the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra. If you are already staying in Fes, starting there avoids returning to Marrakech simply to reach the Sahara.
Can we celebrate a birthday or honeymoon in the desert?
Of course. We’ve helped many couples celebrate honeymoons, birthdays, anniversaries, and even marriage proposals in the Sahara. If you’re celebrating something special, simply tell us before your trip, and we’ll do our best to make your evening even more memorable.
Is this tour suitable for couples, families and private groups?
Yes. This is a private Morocco desert tour, so we can adapt the pace to the people traveling with you. Couples may prefer more quiet time around the dunes, while families may need additional breaks or different desert activities. Let us know who is traveling, and we’ll help arrange the journey accordingly.
Your Desert Tour, Your Way
Our Luxury 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Merzouga is a route we have designed from our experience, but it doesn’t have to be exactly the same for everyone. Perhaps you’d like more time in Merzouga, a different hotel, an extra desert activity, or simply a slower pace along the road. Tell us what matters to you, and our travel team can adapt the journey around your dates, interests and travel style, creating a private Fes Desert Tour that feels like your own.
Good to Know Before Your Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour
Cash Is Still Useful Along the Desert Route
Cards are widely used in Morocco, but smaller cafés, local restaurants, shops and some optional activities may be easier to pay for in Moroccan dirhams. We recommend carrying some cash during your Fes to Merzouga journey, especially once we travel farther into southeast Morocco.
Meals Along the Road Are Part of the Journey
Breakfast and dinner are included as mentioned in your itinerary, while lunch is left open so you can choose what suits you each day. Our driver can suggest trusted local restaurants along the route, whether you would like a quick meal or want to try regional dishes such as Medfouna in Merzouga.
Vegetarian and Special Meals Can Be Arranged
Moroccan food offers plenty of vegetarian choices, and vegetarian or vegan meals can usually be prepared at our hotels and desert camp. If you have an allergy, intolerance or another dietary requirement, please tell us when booking so we can inform each accommodation in advance.
Booking Early Gives You Better Accommodation Choices
Merzouga has many places to stay, but the best luxury camps and small desert hotels can fill quickly during popular travel months. Booking your Fes Desert Tour early gives us more freedom to secure the accommodation we recommend rather than simply choosing what remains available.
You Don’t Need a Large Bag in the Desert
You can travel with your normal luggage during the tour. When it is time for your camel trek, we recommend taking only a small bag with your camera, water and personal essentials. Your larger luggage can be transferred separately, so you don’t need to carry it on the camel.
Internet Is Available, but Don’t Depend on It Everywhere
Wi-Fi is available at many hotels and desert camps, and Moroccan mobile networks cover much of the route. However, signal quality can vary in desert areas. If you need to work or make an important call during your Morocco desert tour, let us know and we’ll help you plan around it.
Your Tour Begins at Your Accommodation in Fes
There is no need to arrange a separate meeting point in the city. On the first morning, our driver will collect you directly from your riad or hotel in Fes at the agreed time, so your journey towards Merzouga can begin comfortably.
Book Your Desert Tour Without the Hassle
Once your dates are confirmed, our team can take care of the transport, accommodation, desert camp and included experiences for you. We recommend sharing any special requests when you book, so everything can be prepared before your 3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Merzouga begins
