Day 1: Fez - Ifrane - Cedar Forest - Ziz Valley - Merzouga desert - Sunset Camel Trek

At around 8:00 AM, we’ll meet you at your riad or hotel in Fez and begin our 6 Days Tour Fez to Casablanca Sahara Trip, leaving the city behind for the landscapes of the Middle Atlas. Today, there is no long road waiting for us. After breakfast at the desert camp, we’ll take our 4×4 and explore the wider landscapes around Merzouga. The dunes may be the famous face of the Sahara, but they are only one part of it. We’ll follow desert tracks across rocky plains and open viewpoints, discovering places that cannot be reached by a normal vehicle. Along the way, we’ll spend time with a nomad family, sharing tea and hearing about daily life in an environment where water, weather and distance have shaped traditions for generations.

Our 4×4 Sahara tour in Merzouga continues towards old desert settlements and the mining area around M’Fis before reaching Khamlia, a village closely connected with Gnawa musical traditions. Here, we’ll slow down for the music rather than simply making another sightseeing stop. After breakfast, we’ll leave Merzouga behind, but the culture of the Sahara stays with us a little longer. Our first stop is Rissani, an important old trading town of the Tafilalt region and still a meeting place for people from the surrounding villages. If we arrive on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday, we’ll have the chance to experience its traditional market at its liveliest. We’ll then continue through Erfoud, a region famous for fossils, before the flat desert scenery slowly begins to change into palm valleys and rocky mountains.

By the time we reach Tinghir, the landscape feels completely different from Merzouga. We’ll follow the green Todra oasis towards Todra Gorge, where we’ll leave the vehicle for an easy walk beside the river beneath the high canyon walls. There is time to slow down here, enjoy the fresh air and have an optional lunch before continuing west. For us, this contrast is one of the pleasures of a Morocco Sahara trip in the space of a morning, you can travel from open desert to a fertile valley beneath the mountains.

Our afternoon continues towards the Dades Valley, passing earth-built villages, gardens and unusual rock formations along the way. After breakfast in the Dades Valley, we’ll continue towards Marrakech through one of the most beautiful parts of southern Morocco. Our road takes us through Kelaat M’Gouna and the Rose Valley, an area known for its Damask roses and small villages surrounded by fields and gardens. From here, we’ll continue towards the palm oasis of Skoura, following a landscape where old kasbahs and traditional earth-built homes still tell the story of life in southern Morocco.

Later, we’ll reach Ait Ben Haddou, where we’ll have time to explore the historic ksar on foot. Walking through its narrow passages and climbing towards the upper part of the village gives you a wonderful view across the surrounding valley. The ksar has also appeared in many international films, but for us, its traditional earthen architecture and history are what make the visit special. Afterward, we’ll have time for an optional lunch before beginning our journey into the mountains.

The final part of the day takes us across the High Atlas Mountains towards Marrakech. We’ll make comfortable stops along the way for mountain views, photographs or simply a cup of tea before descending towards the city. After several days on the road, today we’ll leave the vehicle behind and discover Marrakech on foot with an expert local guide. There is no need for an early departure; after breakfast, your guide will meet you at your riad and introduce you to the Medina through its history, architecture and everyday life. Depending on the day’s plan, you’ll discover landmarks such as the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace and the historic quarters of the old city, while your guide shares the stories that give these places meaning beyond what you see from the outside.

We’ll then step deeper into the Marrakech souks, where narrow streets lead between spice sellers, leather workshops, lantern makers and traditional artisans. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, there will be time to notice the small details, ask questions and understand how the Medina still works as a living neighbourhood.
