Overview

Our 7 Days Morocco Tour  Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga is designed for travellers who want to experience Morocco beyond the main sights, without turning every day into a long drive. The journey begins with time to discover Marrakech alongside an official local guide before crossing the High Atlas Mountains through Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the beautiful Dades Valley. Each day brings a different side of the country, with time for scenic stops, local encounters and the small details that make travelling through Morocco memorable.

The heart of the journey is Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, an area we know especially well. Rather than arriving for sunset and leaving the next morning, you’ll have time to experience the Sahara properly: camel trekking across the dunes, a night in a luxury desert camp, a private 4×4 exploration, Gnawa music in Khamlia, a visit with local nomadic families and the option to enjoy quad biking at sunset. This slower desert stay is what makes this itinerary different from many shorter Morocco Sahara Desert Tours.

From Merzouga, the journey continues through the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas Mountains to Fes, where an official local guide introduces you to the history, craftsmanship and everyday life of the ancient medina. With private transportation, carefully selected accommodation and a route shaped by our local experience, this 7 day Morocco itinerary brings together imperial cities, mountains, kasbahs, valleys and the Sahara in one comfortable journey from Marrakech to Fes.

After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and begin one of the most scenic days of your 7 Days Morocco Tour Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga. The road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, passing small Amazigh villages and dramatic mountain landscapes. We never like to treat this route as simply a drive to the desert, so we take our time, stopping at carefully chosen viewpoints where you can enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and see how the landscape gradually changes as we travel south.

Beyond the mountains, we reach Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most remarkable fortified villages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll have time to walk through its narrow passages and discover the traditional earthen architecture before continuing towards Ouarzazate, often known as the gateway to the Sahara. After a relaxed lunch along the route, the journey continues through the beautiful Valley of Roses, where kasbahs, small villages, and fertile landscapes accompany us towards Boumalne Dades.

By late afternoon, we arrive in the Dades Valley, surrounded by striking rock formations and peaceful mountain scenery. After a full day of discovery, you’ll settle into your hotel or riad, enjoy dinner, and have time to relax. From our experience travelling this route regularly, this overnight stop gives the journey a much more comfortable rhythm and lets you appreciate southern Morocco rather than rushing directly from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Journey Details

Distance: Approx. 320 km
Drive Time: Approx. 6 hours, excluding sightseeing and stops
Accommodation: Selected riad or hotel in Dades Valley
Meals Included: Breakfast & dinner

After breakfast in the Dades Valley, we continue south towards the Sahara, following a route we know well from our Marrakech Desert Tours. Our first important stop is the spectacular Todra Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise above a narrow palm-lined valley. You’ll have time for an easy walk through the gorge before we continue through Tinghir, traditional Amazigh villages and the changing landscapes around Erfoud and Rissani. As we get closer to Merzouga, the scenery becomes drier and more open until the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi finally appear ahead.

On arrival in Merzouga, we’ll help you prepare for the desert in the local way. If you would like, you can wear a traditional desert scarf and learn how locals wrap it to protect against the sun, wind and sand a small detail that makes the experience more comfortable and adds a little Sahara character to your desert outfit. Then it’s time to leave the road behind and begin your camel trek into Erg Chebbi. There’s no need to rush; we’ll time the experience around the season so you can reach a beautiful dune viewpoint as the afternoon light begins to soften.

Before reaching camp, we’ll stop high among the dunes for one of our favourite moments of the journey: sunset over Erg Chebbi. Watching the colours move from warm gold to deep orange while the Sahara becomes completely still is something photographs never quite capture. Afterwards, you’ll continue to our luxury desert camp, where your private tent awaits. Enjoy a Moroccan dinner, traditional Amazigh music around the fire and, when the camp grows quiet, step outside to experience the stars and silence of the Sahara.

Journey Details

Distance: Approx. 250 km
Drive Time: Approx. 4-5 hours, excluding sightseeing, lunch and photo stops
Accommodation: Luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
Meals Included: Breakfast –  dinner

Waking up in Erg Chebbi is one of those mornings worth taking slowly. If you wish, rise early to watch the first light spread across the dunes before returning to camp for breakfast. Today there is no long road ahead; instead, we dedicate the day to discovering the Sahara we call home. With a local driver, you’ll set out on a private 4×4 excursion around Erg Chebbi, leaving the main routes behind to explore the contrasting landscapes, small settlements and desert communities surrounding Merzouga.

Along the way, we’ll spend time with a local nomadic family, sharing tea and learning naturally about their way of life rather than treating the visit as a quick tourist stop. We’ll also continue to Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa heritage, where you can listen to traditional music and discover the stories behind its rhythms. Depending on the season and conditions, the route can also take us through the black desert, the old M’Fis mining area and around Dayet Srij, showing you why some of the best things to do in Merzouga are found beyond the famous golden dunes.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll return to your hotel near Erg Chebbi with time to relax. For travellers looking for a little more adventure, we especially recommend an optional quad-biking experience in Erg Chebbi around sunset. Riding through the desert as the evening light turns the dunes deep gold is one of our favourite ways to finish a full day in Merzouga. Afterwards, return to your hotel for a relaxed evening overlooking the Sahara.

Journey Details

Distance: Local exploration around Erg Chebbi – approximately 40-60 km depending on the day’s route
Drive Time: Approx. 4-5 hours of relaxed 4×4 exploration, including stops and local visits
Accommodation: Selected hotel or riad near the Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga
Meals Included: Breakfast – dinner
Optional Experience: Sunset quad biking in Erg Chebbi

After breakfast, we leave the golden dunes of Merzouga behind and begin the journey north to Fes. Although this is one of the longer driving days of the tour, we don’t see it simply as a transfer. On our Morocco Desert Tours, we plan the route with comfortable breaks and meaningful stops, allowing you to watch Morocco change naturally from the dry Sahara landscapes to palm-filled valleys, mountain towns and, eventually, the greener scenery of the Middle Atlas.

Our first part of the journey takes us through Erfoud and the impressive Ziz Valley, where we’ll stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking its long ribbon of date palms and traditional villages. From here, we continue through Errachidia towards Midelt, with time for lunch along the way. The road then climbs into the Middle Atlas Mountains, bringing a completely different landscape of forests, cooler air and mountain scenery. Depending on the timing and conditions, we can pause near Azrou’s cedar forests before continuing through Ifrane towards Fes.

What makes this journey special is the contrast you experience in a single day. You begin your morning beside the Sahara dunes and finish among the historic streets of one of Morocco’s great imperial cities. We prefer to keep the day flexible rather than rushing between fixed tourist stops our driver adjusts the breaks to the season, road conditions and your pace. By late afternoon or early evening, you’ll arrive at your riad in Fes, where you can settle in and rest before exploring the old medina with an official local guide the following day.

Journey Details

Distance: Approx. 470 km
Drive Time: Approx. 7-8 hours, excluding lunch, viewpoints and other stops
Accommodation: Selected traditional riad or hotel in Fes
Meals Included: Breakfast

After breakfast, your official local guide in Fes will meet you at the riad for a private journey through one of Morocco’s oldest and most fascinating imperial cities. Founded more than twelve centuries ago, Fes is a city where history is still part of everyday life. Rather than simply showing you the main monuments, your guide will help you understand the stories behind the medina, its neighbourhoods, traditional crafts and the generations of families who have kept these traditions alive.

Walking through Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, feels like entering another time. You’ll explore its narrow lanes and lively souks while discovering historic madrasas, fountains, mosques and artisan quarters. Along the way, see the famous Al Quaraouiyine, founded in the 9th century, admire the beautiful Bou Inania Madrasa, and experience the traditional tanneries where leather is still worked using techniques passed down through generations. Your guide will also take you beyond the obvious sights, giving you a more natural glimpse into bakers, craftsmen, small markets and daily life inside the old medina.

We keep this final day flexible around your flight departure time, so the visit never feels rushed. If your schedule allows, there will be time for lunch and a few final moments in Fes before your private transfer to Fes Saïss Airport.
