Itinerary: 5 Days Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech
Day 1: Marrakech city - High Atlas - Telouet - Ouarzazate - Draa Valley - Zagora desert
We’ll begin our 5 Days Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech at around 8:00 AM, when our driver-guide meets you at your hotel or riad. Leaving Marrakech behind, we’ll slowly climb into the High Atlas Mountains. After around two hours on the road, we’ll make our first relaxed stop to stretch our legs, enjoy the mountain air, or have a fresh Moroccan mint tea. If you’re interested, we can also visit a women’s argan oil cooperative to see how the oil is traditionally prepared. The visit is free, and there is never any pressure to buy anything.
We’ll then continue to Tizi n’Tichka Pass, at around 2,260 metres above sea level, where we’ll stop for one of our favourite views across the High Atlas. From here, we’ll leave the busier road and take the quieter route towards Telouet. This road takes us past small Amazigh villages and changing mountain landscapes before we reach Telouet Kasbah, once connected to the powerful Glaoui family. The outside may look simple today, but once we step inside, some of its decorated rooms are a wonderful surprise. Along the old route, we’ll also pass through an area known for its mineral and salt deposits, another small detail of the landscape that tells the story of this historic caravan road.
By lunchtime, we’ll reach Ouarzazate, where we’ll take a comfortable break before our journey turns south towards Zagora. We’ll cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains to Agdz, where the scenery opens into the beautiful Draa Valley. From here, we’ll follow the Draa River through an oasis filled with palm groves, traditional villages, and old earthen kasbahs. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Zagora, where you’ll spend the night in a traditional kasbah-style accommodation surrounded by the oasis. After a long but beautiful first day of our Marrakech Desert Tours, there will be time to relax by the swimming pool and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before dinner.

Day 2: Zagora - Tamegroute - Alnif - Rissani - Merzouga Desert
After breakfast at our kasbah in Zagora, we’ll continue our 5 Days Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech deeper into southern Morocco. Our first visit will be Tamegroute, where we’ll discover the historic Zaouia Naciria, an important religious and cultural centre that has played a role in the region for centuries.
Our local guide will share its story with you before we visit one of Tamegroute’s traditional pottery workshops. Here, you can watch local artisans shaping and decorating their famous ceramics by hand, and if the workshop isn’t too busy, we may even have the chance to try making something ourselves.
From Tamegroute, we’ll continue across the changing desert landscapes towards Alnif, where we can stop for lunch before heading to Rissani. If our visit falls on Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, we’ll take you into Rissani’s traditional market. We love this stop because it still feels very different from the markets in Morocco’s larger cities.
You may see craftsmen making simple wooden objects, repairing and recycling old materials, and traders arriving from villages around the region. We’ll also explain the difference between a ksar and a kasbah as we explore this historic area and stop at the impressive gateway to the town.
Around an hour before sunset, we’ll finally reach Merzouga, and this is where our road journey turns into a real Sahara desert experience. Our camels will be waiting for us at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and we’ll ride together into the golden sands, stopping along the way to enjoy the sunset. Your luggage will travel separately by 4×4, so you only need to carry your personal things during the camel trek.
At our luxury desert camp, you’ll have your own private tent and time for a shower and a little rest before dinner. Later, we’ll gather around the campfire for Amazigh music, dancing, and a relaxed evening beneath the Sahara stars the kind of moment that makes our Merzouga desert tours much more than simply a drive to the desert.

Day 3: Explore Merzouga - the Hidden Side of Erg Chebbi
After breakfast at our luxury desert camp, there is no need to rush. We’ll start our Merzouga desert tour at around 9:00 AM, or a little later if you’d prefer a relaxed morning. With our 4×4 Merzouga Sahara tours, we’ll leave the usual road and explore the landscapes around Erg Chebbi, stopping at a high viewpoint where you can appreciate just how far the dunes stretch.
We’ll then cross the desert towards a nomad family, following tracks once used during the Dakar Rally. Over a glass of tea, we’ll share a little about nomadic life and how families have adapted to the changing Sahara before continuing to M’Fis, an old mining settlement overlooking the desert and the distant Algerian border.
Our next stop is Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa music. This is one of those experiences we prefer not to rush the rhythm has a way of making everyone forget about the road for a while. If you’re hungry, we’ll also recommend trying Medfouna, often called Berber pizza, a traditional stuffed bread that is especially associated with this part of southern Morocco. We’ll then continue around Merzouga, and if Dayet Srij Lake has water during your visit, we’ll stop to enjoy the completely different landscape. Depending on the season and conditions, migratory birds, including flamingos, may sometimes be seen here.
Before finishing our 4×4 Erg Chebbi desert excursion, we’ll visit the oasis near Hassi Labied, where you can see how local families have traditionally managed water and protected their small gardens in such a dry environment.
We’ll show you the old khettara irrigation system and explain why water has always shaped life around the Sahara. By afternoon, we’ll take you to our hotel beside the dunes, where the rest of the day is yours relax by the swimming pool, walk near Erg Chebbi, or simply enjoy doing nothing after two busy days. For us, this slower day is an important part of our Morocco Desert Tours, because you don’t only see the Sahara you have time to understand the people, music, food, and traditions that make Merzouga our home.

Day 4: Merzouga - Erfoud - Fezna - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley
After breakfast at our hotel near the dunes, we’ll leave Merzouga and continue our 5 Days Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech towards Erfoud, an area well known for fossils found in the surrounding desert. If you’re interested, we’ll stop at a local fossil workshop where you can see how the stone is cut and polished and learn about the fossils hidden inside it.
From here, we’ll continue to Fezna, where we’ll visit an old khettara irrigation system. What makes this stop interesting is that we can actually walk down and see part of the system from inside while our guide explains how local people found underground water and moved it across this dry landscape long before modern pumps arrived.
We’ll make a relaxed stop around Melaab for coffee, and if you’d like, you may also have a traditional henna tattoo before we continue towards Tinghir. As we approach the Todra Valley, the landscape suddenly becomes greener, with palm trees, gardens, and villages following the river. In summer, local families often come here to enjoy the shade and cooler air beside the water. We’ll then reach the impressive Todra Gorge, where we’ll leave the vehicle for a gentle walk between the towering canyon walls. There is no need to hurry here; we’ll give you time to walk, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings before stopping for lunch around Tinghir.
Our final road of the day takes us into the beautiful Dades Valley. Before reaching the hotel, we’ll show you the unusual rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers and continue towards the famous bends of Tisdrine, where the road winds dramatically through the mountains. It’s another side of Morocco that feels completely different from the golden dunes we left in the morning. By late afternoon, we’ll settle into our hotel in Dades, where you can slow down, sit beside the swimming pool, read a book, or simply relax after another varied day on our Morocco Desert Tour.

After breakfast, we’ll begin the final day of our 5 Days Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech, following part of the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Our first stop will be Kelaat M’Gouna, the heart of Morocco’s Damask rose country. If you’re travelling with us during the spring, especially around the rose season, you’ll see how important these flowers are to the valley. We’ll visit a local cooperative where the women can show us how roses are transformed into rose water and other traditional products. There is no pressure to buy we stop because it is an interesting part of life in this region.
From there, we’ll continue through the palm oasis of Skoura to visit Kasbah Amridil, one of the places where Morocco’s desert history connects beautifully with our journey. The original settlement dates to the 17th century, while the fortified residence we see today was built in the late 19th century for M’hamed Ben Brahim Nasiri. His family had links to the influential Zawiya Nasiriyya in Tamegroute, which we visited earlier in our tour so Day 5 quietly brings us back to a story that began several days before. We’ll walk inside and discover its traditional rooms, towers, tools, and architecture before continuing to Ouarzazate.
We’ll stop in Ouarzazate for lunch, and if cinema interests you, we can add an optional visit to Atlas Studios, founded in 1983. More than 200 film and television productions have used the studios, including The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and Game of Thrones. Afterwards, we’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains towards Marrakech, enjoying our last mountain views and stopping when we need a break. By late afternoon or evening, we’ll drop you at your riad, hotel, or Marrakech Airport. This is where our Morocco Desert Tour together comes to an end, after five days of dunes, oases, kasbahs, mountain roads, and the small local experiences in between.

Yes. Five days gives us much more breathing room than the shorter desert routes. You have time for the journey to Merzouga, a night in the dunes, and a full day exploring Erg Chebbi before we begin our return to Marrakech.
What makes this 5 day tour different from the usual Marrakech desert tours?
One of the biggest differences is the route and the time we spend along the way. We travel through Zagora and Tamegroute, continue across southern Morocco to Merzouga, and dedicate a full day to discovering the desert rather than arriving in the evening and leaving the next morning.
