Itinerary: 3 Days Desert Tour From Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: Fes - Middle Atlas - Ziz Oasis - Merzouga Sahara

At around 8:00 AM, we’ll meet you at your accommodation in Fes and point our journey south. Today is one of those Moroccan road days where the view outside the window never stays the same for very long. The first change comes around Ifrane, where tiled roofs, forests and mountain air feel far removed from the Sahara waiting for us later in the day. We’ll continue through the cedar country around Azrou, keeping an eye out for the Barbary macaques that live here. There is no fixed schedule for every little stop; if a viewpoint catches your attention or you would simply like a coffee, we’ll make room for it.

Beyond the Middle Atlas, the scenery begins to tell us that we’re heading south. We’ll pass Midelt and Errachidia, with an optional lunch along the way, before following the Ziz River towards the Sahara. One stop we never like to rush is the panoramic view over the Ziz Oasis. From above, you can see a long green ribbon of date palms cutting through an otherwise dry landscape a beautiful introduction to the oasis country of southeast Morocco. From here, we’ll continue through the Tafilalt region until the mountains give way to the open desert around Merzouga.

By late afternoon, the road brings us to the edge of the Sahara, and this is where the first day changes completely. We’ll leave the vehicle and join our camel caravan for the journey across the sand at sunset, with a 4×4 transfer available if you’d rather skip the camel ride. 

Tonight, there is nowhere else we need to reach. Your private tent will be waiting at our luxury desert camp, followed by dinner and an evening around the fire with music and the desert sky above us. After breakfast in the Sahara, we’ll leave the morning open for one last taste of Merzouga. As we travel west, the desert gradually gives way to palm oases and traditional villages. We’ll pass through Erfoud and the small communities of the southeast before reaching Tinghir, where the Todra oasis spreads beneath the dry mountains. At Todra Gorge, we’ll leave the vehicle and walk for a while between its high rock walls beside the river. Our last morning begins among the landscapes of the Dades Valley, but there is still a rich part of southern Morocco ahead of us. We’ll follow the old Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Kelaat M’Gouna, known for its Damask roses, and continue towards the palm groves of Skoura. This region is a beautiful example of how communities have lived between oasis gardens and dry landscapes for generations, with earthen kasbahs still appearing between the palms.

We’ll then travel through Ouarzazate towards Ait Ben Haddou, where we’ll leave the vehicle and explore the fortified ksar on foot. Rather than seeing it only as a famous film location, we’ll take time to notice its traditional earth architecture, narrow passages and old communal spaces a very different side of Morocco from the Sahara we left behind that morning. After the visit and an optional lunch, our road begins climbing again into the High Atlas Mountains.

The final stretch takes us across the Tizi n’Tichka road, where we’ll make our last mountain stops before descending towards Marrakech. We’ll take you directly to your riad, hotel or Marrakech Menara Airport, depending on your plans.
