Day 1: Fes - Middle Atlas - Ziz Valley - Merzouga Desert Hotel

Our 4 Day Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech begins around 8:00 AM at your accommodation in Fes. Today is about watching Morocco change as we travel south. We’ll leave the city for the cooler landscapes of the Middle Atlas, passing Ifrane and the cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques may appear among the trees. We keep the morning easy, with time for coffee, photographs or a short break whenever you need one.

After passing Midelt, the scenery becomes noticeably different. Mountains open into wider, drier landscapes as we continue through the southeast and follow the road towards the Ziz Valley. We’ll stop above its long palm oasis, where date palms follow the river between traditional villages and rocky hills. There will also be time for an optional lunch along the way before we continue through the Tafilalt region towards Merzouga.

Instead of asking you to begin a camel trek immediately after a long day on the road, we’ll take you to a luxury hotel beside the Merzouga dunes, with a swimming pool and views towards the Sahara. After breakfast at our hotel beside the dunes, we’ll change the paved road for desert tracks and begin our 4×4 Merzouga Sahara tour. We’ll ride into the dunes, stop to enjoy sunset, and continue to our luxury desert camp for the night. If camel riding isn’t comfortable for you, there is no need to miss the experience we can take you to the camp by 4×4 instead. After a quiet morning at our luxury desert camp, we’ll enjoy breakfast and leave the Sahara behind for a completely different landscape. Our first cultural stop is Rissani, once an important meeting point for caravans and still one of the liveliest towns of the Tafilalt region. If our journey falls on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday, we can walk through its traditional market, where people from nearby villages still come to trade, shop and meet. From here, we’ll continue west through the small desert towns and open landscapes that connect Merzouga with the oasis country around Tinghir.

By the time we reach Todra Valley, the scenery has changed again. A long belt of palms and gardens appears beneath the dry mountains before the road enters Todra Gorge, where we’ll leave the vehicle and enjoy an easy walk beside the river between its impressive rock walls. We’ll have time for an optional lunch around Tinghir before continuing towards Dades. This part of our Morocco desert tour is one we especially enjoy because, within only a few hours, you can see the landscape move from Sahara plains to green oasis, canyon and mountain valley.
