Day 1: Fes - Ifrane - Azrou Cedar Forest - Midelt - Ziz Valley - Merzouga Sahara

At 8:00 AM, our driver-guide will meet you at your accommodation in Fes, and our Private 5 Days Fes to Marrakech Sahara Trip begins south towards the Middle Atlas. There is no alarm clock for today’s adventure. After your night in the Sahara, we’ll begin whenever you feel ready and set out on our 4×4 Merzouga Sahara tour. Leaving the usual roads behind, we’ll follow desert tracks around Erg Chebbi, climbing to panoramic points where the dunes open in front of us before continuing along sections of the old Dakar Rally tracks. Out here, the Sahara is not only sand. We’ll cross wide black-desert landscapes and stop with a nomad family, sharing tea while our guide introduces you to some of the traditions and realities of life in this environment.

Our desert exploration continues towards M’Fis and the old mining area, another chapter in the history of this region, before we make our way to Khamlia. For us, Khamlia is where the desert seems to find its rhythm. We’ll sit for traditional Gnawa music, and if the music gets you moving, dancing is very welcome. Around lunchtime, we recommend trying Medfouna, the stuffed local bread sometimes known as Berber pizza and a specialty strongly connected with the Tafilalt region. It is a simple way to experience the Sahara through its food as well as its landscapes.

Before finishing our Merzouga desert exploration, we’ll visit the oasis of Hassi Labied. Here, our local guide can show you how water has traditionally been shared between small plots and how the irrigation system continues to support gardens beside an otherwise dry landscape. Afterwards, we’ll return to our hotel beside the dunes, where the swimming pool and a free afternoon are waiting. After breakfast, we’ll say goodbye to Merzouga and begin a day filled with a very different side of southern Morocco. Our first stop is Rissani, and if today falls on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday, we’re in luck these are the town’s traditional market days. The souk still carries the atmosphere of an old trading town, and one of our favorite details is something you probably won’t see at home: a dedicated donkey parking area beside the market. We’ll also discover one of the traditional ksour of the Tafilalt region and stop at the beautiful desert gate before continuing towards Erfoud, a town well known for the fossils found throughout this ancient landscape.

As we leave the Tafilalt behind, our private Sahara trip begins to change from open desert into oasis country. We’ll pause at panoramic points where green palm valleys appear unexpectedly between dry mountains before reaching Tinghir and the Todra Valley. At Todra Gorge, there is no need to hurry. We’ll get out and walk beside the clear river flowing down from the High Atlas, enjoying the cooler air beneath the immense canyon walls. It is a refreshing contrast after our previous days in Merzouga and one of the landscapes that makes this route across southern Morocco so varied.

Later, we’ll take the scenic road through the gorge country towards Dades Valley. As we climb higher, we’ll stop above the famous winding Tisdrin road, where the curves cut dramatically into the mountainside, before continuing deeper into the valley. By late afternoon, we’ll reach our hotel and settle in for the night. This morning doesn’t need to begin in a hurry. After breakfast in the Dades Valley, you can simply enjoy a slow start or, if you would like to get closer to the landscape, we can arrange an optional morning walk with a local mountain guide. It is a lovely way to leave the road for a while, follow small paths between the mountains and fields, and see a quieter side of Dades before we continue our journey.

We’ll then follow part of the historic Road of a Thousand Kasbahs towards Kelaat M’Gouna, at the heart of Morocco’s Valley of Roses. The region is especially known for its fragrant Damask roses, and we’ll visit a local cooperative where women can explain how the flowers are transformed into rose water, oils and other traditional products. There is no rush to shop; what interests us most is understanding how something grown in these small valleys has become part of everyday life and an important seasonal activity for local families.

Our road continues through the palm-filled oasis of Skoura, where we’ll visit Kasbah Amridil, one of the area’s best-preserved examples of traditional earthen architecture. Walking through its rooms and courtyards gives us a glimpse of how families once organized daily life inside these fortified homes. From Skoura, it is only a gentle final drive to Ouarzazate, where we’ll settle into our hotel. If cinema interests you and timing allows, a visit to Atlas Studios can be added before we finish the day; otherwise, the evening is yours to relax and enjoy a slower night before the final journey to Marrakech.

Our final morning begins in Ouarzazate, but we won’t take the quickest road back to Marrakech. Instead, we’ll turn towards the quieter Ounila Valley, a route we enjoy for its changing colors, small Amazigh villages and earth-built homes scattered along the mountainsides.
