Itinerary: 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Ait Ben Haddou - Dades Valley

We’ll begin our journey at around 8:00 AM, picking you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. After leaving the city, we’ll drive into the beautiful High Atlas Mountains. After about two hours, we’ll stop at a panoramic viewpoint where you can stretch your legs, use the restroom, and enjoy a fresh mint tea. You may also visit a women’s argan-oil cooperative to see how traditional products are made, with no obligation to buy anything.

We’ll then continue to the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest point on our route at around 2,260 metres. From here, you can admire wide mountain views, winding roads, and small Amazigh villages built along the hillsides. During winter, the surrounding peaks may be covered with snow, creating one of the most beautiful views on our Marrakech desert tours.

Our next stop is the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, where we’ll walk through the ancient village and discover how its earthen houses, towers, and narrow streets were built. After the visit, we’ll help you choose a good local restaurant for lunch. If time allows and you are interested, we can also arrange an optional visit to Atlas Film Studios or stop near the historic Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate.

Before reaching the Dades Valley, we’ll stop in Kalaat M’Gouna, the heart of Morocco’s Valley of Roses. Here, local women create soaps, creams, perfumes, and rose water from the famous Damask rose, especially during the harvest season in May. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our hotel in Dades, where you can relax, enjoy the surroundings, and rest before the next day of your journey toward the Merzouga Desert.

Journey Details

  • Distance: Approximately 330 km
  • Driving time: Around 6-7 hours, including visits and scenic stops
  • Accommodation: Hotel or riad in Dades Valley
  • Meals included: Dinner and breakfast
  • Optional visits: Atlas Film Studios and local rose cooperative

Day 2: Dades Valley - Todra Gorge - Merzouga Desert

After enjoying a traditional Moroccan breakfast, we’ll continue our 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech towards the Sahara. Our first stop is the spectacular Tissdrine Gorge, where you’ll enjoy one of the most famous panoramic views in southern Morocco.

From here, we can clearly see the winding mountain road with its famous curves, making it one of the best photo stops of the entire journey. Before leaving the Dades Valley, we’ll also stop at another beautiful viewpoint overlooking the green valley below, where we’ll explain how local families use the river to grow fruit trees, vegetables, and small farms that have supported life here for generations.

As we continue our journey, we’ll pass through small Amazigh villages before reaching Tinghir, one of the oldest oasis towns in the region. If you’re interested, we can make an optional stop at a local carpet workshop, where skilled craftsmen still weave traditional Amazigh carpets by hand. We’ll happily explain the symbols, colours, and stories behind these beautiful designs, giving you a better understanding of Morocco’s rich cultural heritage.

Our adventure then takes us through the beautiful Todra Valley, home to thousands of palm trees and traditional mud-brick villages. As local people, we always say that when the palm trees begin to appear, you’re getting closer to the desert. Soon after, we’ll arrive at the impressive Todra Gorge, where cliffs rise more than 500 metres above the river. You’ll have time to walk through the canyon, enjoy the fresh air, and experience one of Morocco’s most famous natural wonders.

Around lunchtime, we’ll stop near Melaab, where you can enjoy a local meal and, if you wish, browse traditional desert clothing. Many travelers like to buy a lightweight scarf here, although if you already have one, it will be perfect for your camel ride.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Merzouga, where our camel guides will be waiting to welcome you. Together, we’ll ride across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes, enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Sahara as the sun begins to set. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we’ll happily arrange a comfortable 4×4 transfer to the camp. When we reach our Luxury Desert Camp, we’ll welcome you with a glass of traditional Berber tea before you settle into your private tent.

After a delicious Moroccan dinner, we invite you to join us around the campfire for Amazigh music, local stories, and conversations about desert life and the nomadic culture we grew up with. Before going to sleep, take a few quiet moments to admire the Milky Way and the countless stars above the Sahara. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a shooting star. We always recommend waking up early the next morning to experience one of the most unforgettable sunrises in the Erg Chebbi Desert.

Before leaving Merzouga, if you’re looking for one last adventure, you can choose an optional ATV or quad biking experience across the dunes. Then, we’ll continue to Erfoud, a town famous for its ancient fossils and marble workshops, where millions of years of history are preserved in beautiful stone.

Our journey continues through the spectacular Ziz Valley, one of the largest palm oases in Morocco. We’ll stop at a panoramic viewpoint where you can admire thousands of palm trees stretching along the valley, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Morocco. From here, we’ll cross the Tizi n’Talghamt Pass, leaving the desert behind as the scenery changes to mountains, rivers, and green valleys. Around Midelt, known as Morocco’s apple capital, we’ll stop for lunch before continuing north.

In the afternoon, we’ll drive through the peaceful Cedar Forest of the Middle Atlas Mountains, home to the famous Barbary macaques. If they are nearby, we’ll stop to watch them in their natural habitat before continuing to the charming town of Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its clean streets, alpine-style houses, and beautiful gardens. FAQs: 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

Why do so many travelers choose a Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour instead of returning to Marrakech?

Many travelers prefer finishing in Fes because it allows them to discover more of Morocco without driving the same road twice. During this journey, we’ll experience the High Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, the Ziz Valley, the Cedar Forest, and finally the imperial city of Fes, making the trip more varied and enjoyable.

Of course. One of the advantages of our private Morocco Desert Tours is flexibility. If you see a beautiful landscape, local market, or viewpoint, we’ll stop whenever it’s safe to do so. We want you to enjoy the journey, not simply travel from one place to another.

The Merzouga Desert is home to the famous Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the highest sand dunes in Morocco. Their golden colours, peaceful atmosphere, and unforgettable sunsets make Merzouga one of the highlights of our Marrakech  Desert Tours.

As local guides, we especially love travelling between September and May, when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing and camel trekking. Spring brings green valleys and blooming roses, while autumn offers clear skies and comfortable temperatures in the Sahara.

Of course. We’ve helped many couples celebrate honeymoons, birthdays, anniversaries, and even marriage proposals in the Sahara. If you’re celebrating something special, simply tell us before your trip, and we’ll do our best to make your evening even more memorable.

We’re a local family from the Sahara, and we believe every journey should feel personal. We travel at a relaxed pace, share the stories behind the places we visit, and never rush you through the experience. Our goal is for you to leave Morocco with wonderful memories, not just beautiful photos.

Make This Journey Your Own

Every traveler is different, and we believe your journey should be too. If our 3 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes doesn’t perfectly match your travel plans, we’ll be happy to customize it for you. Whether you’d like to spend more time in the Sahara, add extra experiences, or change the route, our local team will create a private itinerary that suits your interests, travel dates, and pace. At Morocco Tours Plan, we specialize in custom Morocco Desert Tours designed around you, not the other way around.
